Effective Ayurveda remedies for managing tonsils

Tonsilitis is a very common disease of the throat addressed by most of us at least once in our life. It is the inflammation of the tonsils. This condition causes severe pricking pain and irritation to the throat. It is common in children. According to Ayurveda, tonsilitis is explained as a condition named Tundikeri. It is caused due to the vitiation of kapha and rakta. Here we are going to discuss some tips one should follow to manage tonsilitis apart from taking medicines.

  • Avoid exposure to cold climate and drinks. This can worsen the condition.
  • Drink only lukewarm water. This helps in fast healing.

  • Do lukewarm saline water gargling 2 to 3 times daily for a week.

  • Drink decoction of haritaki (Terminalia chebula) mixed with honey.
  • The decoction of Nimba (Azadirachta indica) and darvi (Berberis aristata) should be used for gargling.

  • Steam inhalation therapy should be done.

  • Since tonsilitis is caused due to kapha vitiation, nasya or administration of medicine can be done through the nostrils. 2 drops of Tulasipatra swarasa or the juice of Ocimum sanctum can be used for this.
  • The person should take proper bed rest from easy recovery. Sound rest is also essential.

  • Avoid intake of oily food, milk, and dairy products. This can again increase kapha, thereby worsening the condition.
  • Include turmeric (Curcuma longa), fenugreek (Trigonella foenum), black pepper (Piper nigrum), etc in the diet.
